 Interesting Sites

This site is very much a provisional list of useful and interesting sites. Please let me know about any other good sites you find. A few words saying what their content is and why you like them would be much appreciated.

WebChurch.  An inspired internet ministry run by volunteers in Newport on Tay.

  • Contains a Directory of Religious organisations in and beyond Scotland

  • Provides a range of well presented development resources for Churches and individuals

  • Coordinates an army of 'prayers' who offer intercessions for anyone who asks,

  • Helps 'real' Churches to use the internet more effectively and shows just how effective it can be for ministry.

  • Demonstrates how site content is more important than snazzy presentation.

Sacred Space.  This is a beautifully presented area of prayer run by Irish Jesuits.

BBC Religion page A goldmine of links to interesting sites, information about programmes, text and audio tapes of recent programmes and all very user friendly. A good place to start surfing - if you have at least 30 minutes to spare.

The Daily Office. The Online Daily Office is a very well presented ministry of The Mission of St. Clare. It gives busy and isolated people a way to participate in Morning and Evening Prayer including the readings and psalms for each day. There is music to go with the services but its quality is poor.

Scottish Christian.com.  Good links to almost everything about Scottish churches and church activities you are likely to need. Good monthly newsletter available by e mail on free subscription. Non denominational, provides links to church news boards and magazines. Side Chapels for all the main churches.

Scottish Episcopal Church.  The Church's home site. News and links to SEC churches. Good history, the daily office, liturgies and list of internet ministries.

Anglicans on line. Claims to be the 'online centre of the Anglican/Episcopal world'.  Updated weekly. Links to useful sites. Worldwide Anglican news.

Gospel Communications network.  An alliance of on line Christian Ministries. Treasury of information and inspiration. On line searchable Bible. Free web site tools.

Kirkweb. Materials for Ministers, elders and anyone else who organises Church groups and activities.

The Cyber Hymnal. Over 2,700 hymns, midi tunes, scores and hymnology. Very easy to get distracted.

The Iona Community and The  Taizé Community.  Need I say more?

The Church of England. A good site which loads slowly. There is an awful lot of information. Can be a bit daunting if you are not a regular user but great if you have time or need to know the Church's position on current ethical questions.

Oremus.  Very good daily prayer and prayer resources. Intercessions.

Internet Medieval Sourcebook and Hall of Church History.  Huge amounts of readily digested information presented in interesting ways.

Church of Scotland. A highly professional site, full of information.

The Anglican Communion.  Take a virtual tour around the world - and much, much more.

Monastery of Christ in the Desert. An excellent place to find insight into the life, work and witness of a lively Monastery. The Desert has always provided inspiration for 'people of the Book' seeking answers to the Mysteries of Truth, Faith, Purpose and Identity. It provides the Liturgy for the day, notes on Saints, newsletter from the Abbot and more. Easy reading from a Spiritual powerhouse.

Contemplative Outreach Promotes 'centering Prayer', after the teaching of Father Thomas Keating. Bookstore worth a visit.

Thomas Merton Foundation  Easily accessed resources, especially for meditation, reflection and prayer.

Christian Events Guide, Run by Carrubbers Close. Primarily for students and those of an evangelical persuasion.

Doorway to Islam  Inspiring site with good links

Buddhism There are many streams of Buddhist thought, of which a selection may be found through the main hyperlink. A good place to start is the  Soka Gakkai site,  because it connects with issues which we in the west are concerned about, such as 'Women for Peace. In the Overview of World Religions below, the Buddhism section is accessible and interesting.

Judaism  Explore Judaism, Israel and the Holocaust at Zipple.com, the Jewish Super Site! Guides to every city in Israel. History of Israel, the Jewish people and Jerusalem. Good links to other Jewish sites.

Overview of World Religions This often controversial site is being compiled by a multi-faith group and is well worth visiting.

Finally, for those concerned about the future of our planet, the Earth Charter..
